Bay Area Musicals is excited to start a New Works Program, bringing original musicals from conception to full-production in the San Francisco Bay Area. We believe originality is key for the success and future of the American musical. To do this, we must nurture and support the playwrights who give voice to these ideas.
Each year we will be selecting three (3) original musicals from composers, lyricists, and writers who will have their work presented as a staged reading. These musicals are selected by a team of five, leading professionals in the industry ranging from Broadway music directors to Bay Area actors. Upon decisions being made; we will have a writer’s intensive/retreat for the three (3) selected, a workshop for two (2) of the musicals, and one (1) given the opportunity to be fully produced in our season the following year.
Bay Area Musicals plans to incubate new musicals from beginning to end. A musical cannot be created over night or on its own. Writers need actors, directors, producers, and ultimately an audience to inform them of their work and the journey it needs to take. A new musical requires dynamic collaboration, time, space, and the freedom to test out radical changes & ideas in a safe environment.
The New Works Program will be accepting submissions from July 1, 2015 through September 1, 2015. Submissions received after September 1, 2015 will have to wait and submit the following cycle. Submissions must meet the following criteria that is listed below.
***NO SUBMISSIONS WERE ACCEPTED THIS YEAR. WE WILL BE OPENING AGAIN JULY 1, 2016 FOR ANOTHER ROUND OF SUBMISSIONS.
